Event 3 Blog - Blake Kirshner

The HOX Zodiac event on June 5th was a very interesting one with lots of insight on the zodiac of the horse. It is amazing to hear people like Linda's stories on how they felt connected to the horse. Linda almost got divinely brought to the front of the stage after buying a last minute ticket to a broadway play and was approached by a horse she felt infatuated by and had an outer body experience. Certain people like Maryam Razi felt this connection to horses so much that festivities and parties are held to honor it. Maryam and her significant other are a tiger and a horse, so they thought they would share a common meal of fish. Below are pictures of this party honoring their zodiac animals.  The significance of the connection to horses is also their domestication, and how we ourselves long to be free just like the animals. Domesticated animals are fed, dressed, groomed, and in horse's case saddled up. The same is with humans, we are fed, dressed, and are not forced to gather fo...

Blog comment Week 9 - Blake Kirshner

Response to John https://johnmorgandesma9.blogspot.com/2022/05/week-9.html Hello John, I enjoyed reading your blog about how artists working with scientists achieved great things, and unfortunately aren't funded as such anymore. You brought up a great point that artists play a key role in getting the public on board with what organizations like NASA are doing. Artists can propel space exploration and human habitation forward.

Week 9 - Space + Art - Blake Kirshner

This week's topic was perhaps the most interesting to me. In the past weeks, we have learned about how the best artist are successful due to their creativity and ability to think outside of the box. When human's were still naive about the stars and solar system, and where earth was in relationship to the sun, creativity made possible the greatest discoveries. For example Nicolaus Copernicus, an astronomer in the early 1500's had to harness his outside of the box thinking to come up with a heliocentric model. This model set the sun in the middle of the solar system instead of the earth (see picture below).  It is the mysteriousness of space that is so very intriguing to me, and many people who have chosen to study the stars. Art is mystery, and there are so many photos and pictures that have yet to be drawn and captured that put people in awe of how large the universe is and how little humans know about it. Below is one of the most remarkable space photo's I have ever s...

Response to Ethan  https://ethanflanagandesma9.blogspot.com/2022/05/week-8-nanotechnology-art.html#comments Hi Ethan, I liked how you clarified how small a nanometer is, because this is vital in understanding nanotechnology and how impressive it is. It is truly interesting how we are understanding colors of animals like the morph butterfly that have their UV shade because of their specific nanoparticles. The possibilities are endless when it comes to creation of new colors, as you said. Thank you for the blog I enjoyed reading it.

Week 8 - Nanotech + Art - Blake Kirshner

Nanotechnology is a very broad term relating to the harnessing of atoms (sometimes smaller) for engineering purposes. In Ray Kurzweil's Ted Talk he breaks down how nanotechnology of all all kinds have exponentially grown over the past few centuries and decades. Kurzweil brings up an example of how a whole building in the 1980's harnessed a much less powerful machine than what we can hold in our hands for a fraction of the price. He seems to think in another 25 years what we can fit into our pockets we can fit into a blood cell.  The scientists who work on these developments are also artists. In order to create the next big invention you have to have a creative mind while still being dedicated to the rules of biology and technology. The picture below is an artist who used nanotechnology to sculpt a human being on the head of a needle. As we all know a needle is so tiny nobody would have ever thought this possible twenty years ago. The possibilities of ...

Response to Nick McLain  https://nickmclainblog.blogspot.com/2022/05/blog-6-nick-mclain.html Hello Nick, I enjoyed looking at your blog. I think the brain is a very fascinating thing when we look at how it does things habitually without us knowing. The brain is artistic in ways that we cannot understand, but through art we can better understand it! It is truly a beautiful thing when art can be the greatest teacher for understanding the anatomy of the brain.

Week 7 - Neuroscience + Art - Blake Kirshner

Studying a topic such as neuroscience requires imagination, creativity, and intelligence (specifically in the early 20th century). Neuroscience is more than just the anatomy of the brain, it is consciousness of humanity in its whole. Consciousness is every thought, every feeling, and once understood people can really take control of their lives. Technology is developing so quickly that soon people will be able to scan their own brain in milliseconds, and be able to tell which parts of their brain activate when certain feelings are triggered. This is explained in the video below with Christopher deCharm's TED talk.  Christopher claims that this new technology can be used to treat chronic pain without any injections or medication, just knowledge. One must ask, how could this ever be done without outside medication or assistance? Will people pay money in the future for medical surgery to remove certain parts of their brain associated with their chronic pain? The opportunities ar...
